What was the first thing you thought when you saw your published book the first time?
My first published book…OMG. It was such a thrill!!! Then my dad asked me, “Did you mark the naughty bits for me?” and I realized to my horror that my parents were going to read my sex scenes! YIKES!

When did you first decide to call yourself a writer? What prompted the decision?
After I had reached the finals of the RITA with the second book I’d sold, I felt qualified. That was in about 2000, I believe.

What is your best advice for someone just starting their first manuscript? Halfway through? Just finished?
The best advice for any writer is to read obsessively, and not just anything. Read great books, books that are well-written in modern English. I love Austen, but I don’t want to write like her-not two centuries later. Reader expectations have really changed.

The other best advice is to write. Never get out of the habit of writing. Even if it feels like you’re digging ditches with your teeth, even if on some days you can’t decide between and, if, when or but as you’re staring at that stubbornly blank page, write.
